Eleanor L. “Ellie” Dugdale passed away on July 22, 2017 in the comfort of her family, friends, and caregivers, at Brookdale Assisted Living Community in Carmel, Indiana. Eleanor, known by many simply as “Ellie”, lived a wonderful and colorful life. With a twinkle in her eye, a gift for tremendously good humor, a genuineness of character, strength, grace, generosity, presence, and a gentle warmth full of love and support, she was loved by her family and friends. She befriended any and everyone, was a presence wherever she went, and she instilled confidence and integrity throughout her life. Ellie’s love of life, exuberance, and comedic approach, was an inspiration to those she knew. She will be missed by so many.

The daughter of Arthur and Ada Wright, Eleanor was born in Madisonville, Kentucky and spent her early life in parts of Kentucky and the Appalachian Mountains, before moving to the south side of Indianapolis with her family, where she attended Beech Grove High School. She excelled in school and attended Butler University in Indianapolis. After college, she rose to the position of Chief Executive Assistant to the President of Dage Electronics followed by working in the legal department at Eli Lilly. Thereafter, she managed insurance and annuity accounts, managed a deli and restaurant, and 1975 co-founded the family business, Dugdale Beef Company, Inc. with her husband and children. Later in life she lived in North Lake Tahoe. She loved mountain living and the “chime” of winning at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe slot machines. Upon returning to Indianapolis several years after her husband’s death, she met and fell in love with Seymour Mandel. Together they shared numerous years of dinners, card games, nights on the porch, and the company of each other. Above all, Ellie considered her greatest accomplishment to be the furthering of love and happiness in her family.

Ellie was predeceased by her husband, William F. Dugdale, her parents, Arthur and Ada Wright, her sisters, Sue and Virginia, and her brother, John. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Dugdale Deering (Matt Deering, and daughter Jamie Deering Henry, and son Tucker Deering), Michael Dugdale (son Ryan, and daughters Laura Dugdale Wray and Erica), William P. Dugdale (Angie, and daughter Caitlin, and sons, Colin and Sean), Joseph Dugdale (Kathy, and sons Jonathan, and Joseph Mackenzie), Jeffrey Dugdale (and in loving memory of Jeffrey’s wife, Sarah Schacht-Dugdale, and their children, Jessica Dugdale Olimb, Paul, and Gregory, James Dugdale (Eric), John Dugdale (Kristen, and sons William, Philip, and Quinton), and great grandchildren, Josephine, Evelyn, Elliott, Helen. Eleanor is also survived by sister, Donna, and much extended family.

Visitation and Story Time for family and friends will be on Saturday, July 29 from 1:30 to 3:00 at Indiana Funeral Care; Harry Moore Chapel, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250. A private, family only graveside service will follow immediately after the service.

“All we have is each other”, Ellie said many times. Memorials may be made by reaching out to a charity or a person of any age in need with time, talent or a contribution.

Arrangements entrusted to Indiana Funeral Care.
