William "Billy" H. Whitmore Jr., 83
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - William "Billy" H. Whitmore Jr., of Las Vegas, died peacefully on July 17, 2017, at the Nathan Adelson Hos-pice Center in Las Vegas, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Billy was born in Portland on Jan. 10, 1934, the second son of the late Cecelia Deetjen Whitmore and William H. Whitmore Sr. He was a graduate of Deering High School, Class of 1952, where he was a standout member of the basketball team. Billy graduated from the University of Maine, where he was a member of the golf team.

His career choice was education and he was a very successful golf coach while teaching in the Cape Elizabeth school system. Billy was an avid golfer and was a member of the Riverside Golf Course while living in Maine, before moving to Las Vegas. He participated in several City of Portland Championship Tournaments. Billy belonged to the Black Mountain Country Club in Las Vegas, but his favorite pastime was poker. He truly enjoyed a good poker game.

Billy was predeceased by his wife, Vonnie Hamlin Whitmore, in 2007. He is survived by two daughters, Lynne Pinero and her husband Nick, of Portland; and Linda "Sue" Whitmore, of Las Vegas; three grandchildren, Sidney, Jennifer, and Janesa; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; brothers, John "Jack" Whitmore, of Vero Beach, Fla.; and Richard "Dick" Whitmore and his wife Theresa, of Portland; sisters, Barbara Jensen and her husband Ronald, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and Sandra Pardi and her husband Guido, of Falmouth; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, from 3-6 p.m. at
A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave., in Portland. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017, at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland.
