Mitchell, Fred M., 92, retired police officer, died July 24. Graveside services 10 a.m. Friday, Sunset Memorial Gardens, Lawton (Becker-Rabon, Lawton).

Graveside service for Fred M. Mitchell will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 28, 2017 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. John Clipp officiating.

Burial with Lawton Police Department honors will be under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.

Fred M. Mitchell, age 92, of Elgin, passed away Monday, July 24, 2017 in Lawton.

Fred was born on October 16, 1924 in Wapanucka, Oklahoma, the oldest son of Joe and Mary Mitchell.

Not long after Fred was born the family including his brothers and one sister moved to Sterling City, Texas where they worked on a ranch. Fred excelled in ranching, farming, cowboying and playing football for the Sterling City Eagles. In high school he was the quarterback.

In 1944 Fred was drafted into the U.S. Army but only served for twelve months due to a medical discharge. He then returned home to Texas.

In 1950 the Mitchell family moved back to Oklahoma to a farm near Geronimo where he met Betty June Matlock.

Fred and Betty married and not long after in 1951 Fred joined the Lawton Police Department where he served for twenty-nine years. Fred retired from the force in 1980, honorably achieving the rank of major.

Fred and Betty then moved from town to the country and settled down on a little thirteen acre farm near Elgin where Fred remained until his death from cancer.

Fred is survived by his grandkids, Brad Disel and Steve, David and Clayton Barrett, a brother, Big Bill and his wife Patsy and other relative including Norma Mitchell, Lizy Mitchell and Mike Mullholland.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty and three daughters, Barbara, Gail and Jan.

Fred was very much loved and very special. He will be missed very much.
