Sewanee, Tenn - Services for Col Edmund Kirby-Smith, 78, Sewanee, a retired Army Engineer and graduate of West Point, will be at 4:30pm tomorrow at All Saints' Chapel.

Burial in University Cemetery

He died Sunday in St Thomas Hospital, Nashville.

Col Kirby-Smith attended Sewanee Military Academy, where he was Class Valedictorian in 1932. He attended the University of the South for three years, and while there, qualified for Phi Beta Kappa.

He went on to graduate from West Point, 10th in his class and chose Panama as his first duty station.

During World War ll, he was stationed at various forts, including Bragg, Belvoir, Leavenworth and Sam Houston, in addition to seeing action in Africa, Italy, France and Germany.

Col Kirby-Smith received numerous decorations, including the Star of Africa, two Legion of Merit Awards and the Bronze Star.

Survivors: his wife, Maria Gaillard Cortes Kirby-Smith; son, Edmund Kirby-Smith of Washington, DC and daughter, Maria Kirby-Smith, Camden, SC
