He was a Chilean sailor. In the the War of the Pacific he participated as 2nd Sergeant aboard the Emerald Corvette in the Naval Combat of Iquique in which he died. Together with Arturo Prat and Ignacio Serrano, he is considered one of the greatest naval heroes in the history of Chile.
