He was a Chilean Navy military officer and lawyer . As military man, he remained in the Chilean Navy between 1858 and 1879 during which he participated in the wars against Spain (1865-1866) - where he intervened in the naval combats of Papudo and Abtao - and the Pacific (1879-1883) - where he commanded the corvette Esmeralda in the naval combat of Iquique in which he died. He is considered the greatest naval hero in Chile, which has been commemorated in various ways: 9 units of the Chilean Navy, a locality, a football club, the Naval School, 2 an Antarctic base, a province, university, and 144 streets.
