Pvt Carbone was killed in action (KIA) on the first day of battle of Tarawa, Nov. 20, 1943, a huge victory for the U.S. military because the Gilbert Islands provided the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet a platform from which to launch assaults on the Marshall and Caroline Islands to advance their Central Pacific Campaign against Japan. His next of kin were listed as (Parents) Mr. and Mrs. Louie Carbone, 254 Gold St., Brooklyn, NY.

His remains were accounted for on July 17, 2017 by The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and were returned to his family for burial September 30 in his hometown with full military honors.
