Carol Lee Boyle of Sioux City passed away on Sunday, July 23 at Sun Rise Retirement Community. A Memorial Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend Roger Madden officiating. Entombment will be in the Logan Park Mausoleum. Carol was born November 6, 1932 in Algona, Iowa to Archibald "Doc" and Caroline (Bailey) Whitlow. She grew up in Armstrong, Iowa and following high school graduation, began studying English at Grinnell College. After two years there, she realized that she would rather be a nurse than write the great American novel, and so she transferred to the University of Iowa, where she got her BSN. While working on the psychiatric ward at the VA hospital there, she met her husband, Don Boyle, where he was working as an attendant and finishing his undergraduate degree. After a short nursing stint in San Antonio, Texas, Carol joined Don in Louisiana, where he was stationed as a pilot in the Air Force and she worked in a pediatrician's office. They were married October 10, 1958, and after his active duty, they returned to the University of Iowa for Don to attend medical school. She went back to working at the VA, and their son Douglas was born (1963) before they moved to Oakland, CA for Don's internship. Carol continued to work as a nurse in CA, and after that year, during his residency back at Iowa, she worked again at the VA. Their daughters Susan (1965) and Sarah (1966) were born during that time.
When they moved to Sioux City for Don to begin general surgery practice, Carol stopped nursing, and concentrated full time on raising her children, creating a warm and welcoming home. She was active in the schools and community as well. Over the years, she served in the PTA, was a room mother many times, a den mother for Cub Scouts, and involved with PEO, Traveler's club, Medical Wives Auxiliary, League of Women Voters, volunteering at the Florence Crittenton home, and served in many positions at church as well. Carol was also key in starting an investment club for women, "Dollars and Sense," that only recently disbanded. She was always a learner, and that never ending curiosity made her a voracious reader, a gift that she passed on to her children
Carol never met a stranger; she would look for opportunities to meet new friends wherever she went. She created a home where there was often an extra place or two at the dinner table, and she loved that! Her kids' friends were always welcomed, and her hospitality was well known. She supported her husband in all of his endeavors, and was her children's greatest cheerleader. Carol had a rock solid foundation of faith that not only sustained her through the years, but was a beacon of hope for others on their spiritual journeys as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, her husband, Don, and her son, Douglas.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan (West Des Moines) and Sarah (Troy) Hansen of Sioux City, and 5 grandchildren (Carrie Salsness, Jenni Salsness-Tvedten, Trevor and Jessica Hansen, and Nick Boyle) and two great granddaughters (Grace Salsness-Tvedten and Eleanor Salsness-Tvedten) and a sister, Rose Coyle (Minneapolis).
