Dorothy Jean (Skavang) Petersen was born March 25, 1921 on the Skavang Homestead north of Crocker, SD, the daughter of Melvin M. and Ruth (Carlton) Skavang.

She was baptized August 28, 1921 at Bradley in the Methodist Church and confirmed in 1934 in the Crocker Lutheran Church.

She attended grade school at Spring Valley and Finstad rural schools. When she was 7 years old, she moved with her parents to a farm southwest of Bradley in Cottonwood Township.

In her teens, she helped her dad with the farm work as she had no brothers. She graduated from Bradley High School in 1938 and then attended Watertown Business College.

On February 1, 1942 she married Clarence LeRoy Stevens. She spent time with him when he was stationed at Sheppard Field, Texas. He was killed in action over Greece January 11, 1944. He was a Tech Sgt. and 1st Engineer on a Flying Fortress. He was buried at Ft. Snelling leaving his son Danny, a 4 month old baby boy. Dorothy lived with her baby Danny at her parent’s home for three years.

Dorothy married Vernon Petersen on October 12, 1946 at the Lutheran parsonage in Bradley, SD. They farmed for 8 years west of Bradley on the Colgate farm. In 1954 they moved to the Petersen Homestead south of Clark where they farmed for 8 years.

She taught Sunday school, helped with Luther League, and she was President and Treasurer of WELCA. Dorothy was a member of the church council, sang in the choir for many years, and was church historian and church librarian for 13 years. She enjoyed her Circle and Women’s Bible Study. She loved her Lord and had a strong faith.

She worked for 21 years in the Auditor, Treasurer and Highway Offices in the Clark County Court House and retired in 1984.

Dorothy came from a family who loved music. She played in bands her dad directed and she and her dad played coronet duets on many different occasions. She sang in duets and quartets and played the piano.

She loved to read, play golf, dance, bowl, crochet, write poetry, make scrapbooks, fix memory books for her children and other family members and spend precious time with her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
