Professional Football Player. Born Willie Carroll Townes, he played both the defensive end and defensive tackle position for the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, and the New York Giants from 1966 to 1971. He played football collegiately at the University of Tulsa where he was one of best defensive linemen to ever play for the Golden Hurricane. He was drafted by both the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 1966 NFL Draft and the Boston Patriots of the 1966 AFL Redshirt Draft and signed with the Cowboys. During his rookie season in 1966, he was unofficially credited with nine sacks, tying him with later Cowboy defensive end Harvey Martin for the most sacks by a Cowboy rookie in team history. During the famous 1967 "Ice Bowl" NFL Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers, he become best known for causing a fumble that was run in for a touchdown by teammate George Andrie. Injuries caused him to miss part or all of the next two seasons and he was traded to the New Orleans Saints on September 9, 1970. He only appeared in six games for the Saints before being released on January 25, 1971. He then joined the New York Giants, but he was released by the team on August 24, 1971 before he could play a game with them. He retired from pro football after his release. During his NFL career, he played in 38 games, scored one touchdown, and had one safety. He also is tied with Larry Cole for the third most sacks (15) by a Cowboy in their first two years. In 1982 he filed a malpractice suit against the Dallas Cowboys. In 1986 he was inducted into the University of Tulsa Athletic Hall of Fame.
