Donald Watson Goodman
December 13, 1945—July 10, 2017

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Donald W. Goodman, 71, died early Monday morning, July 10, in Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, following a short illness. He was a resident of Aurora, Illinois, for more than 40 years, but has lived in Columbus for the past four years.

Donald Watson Goodman was born in Mount Frere (eastern Cape Province), South Africa, on December 13, 1945, to Watson and Rose (Stair) Goodman. In South Africa, Donald attended English-medium public schools in the Germiston (Gauteng) area. In 1961, Donald and his family moved to Winona Lake, Indiana, where his parents co-founded World Missionary Press, Inc.

Donald graduated from Warsaw High School in 1964. After attending Bob Jones University for one year (with interests in radio broadcasting), he transferred to Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University), where he participated in dramatic productions and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

Donald first worked for the Social Security Administration in Michigan City, Indiana, handling claims, then became a financial advisor and tax preparer. He settled in Aurora, Illinois, worked with Hewlett-Jackson, eventually owning a Hewlett-Jackson franchise.

Donald married Susan Kim Matteson, a first-grade teacher, on December 21, 1974. Kim taught first grade at Freeman Elementary School in Aurora for 32 years until she passed away on October 27, 2002.

Donald was involved for many years with the Jaycees and was an active member of Gideons International (distributor of free Bibles worldwide).

Growing up with missionary parents who trusted God for daily provision, Donald developed a strong faith early in life. At age 5, Donnie (as he was known) told his parents that he wanted to pray that the Lord would send his Daddy $100. This had not happened before, but so strong was his faith that God would answer his prayer, that he was disappointed when it did not arrive in the mail the next day! But a month later, a check for $100 did arrive from America by surface mail. It had been on the way for one month! Donald had many prayers answered over his lifetime. He loved his Savior, Jesus Christ, and believed in the truth of God’s Word and its power to transform lives. His deep interest in and regular support of World Missionary Press, a ministry now printing and shipping Scripture booklets in 346 languages worldwide, continued throughout his life.

Donald is survived by his sisters, Vicky R. Benson and Ruth E. Johnson; his brother and sister-in-law, Harry W. and Tricia Goodman; niece Jessica Goodman; nephews Jeff Benson and Grant Goodman; and 8 great nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Kim, and his brothers-in-law Jay Benson and Jerry Johnson.

Memorial services will be held in Columbus, Ohio, August 12, 11:00 am, at Covenant Baptist Church (5100 Dierker Rd). Final interment is to be at Spring Lake Cemetery, 745 S. Lincoln, Aurora, Illinois.
