Verna graduated high school from Kilgore High School in 1946. She graduated with honors from Kilgore college with an Associates in Arts degree in 1948. In 1950 she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Texas State College of Women, again earning academic honors. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society in 1972.
In 1950, Verna married Hugh E. Martin. She taught English at southwest Mississippi Junior College in McComb, Mississippi and continued her career in education at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Tx where she was the librarian and recruiting Counselor. Verna retired in 1989.
Verna is survived by one son, James E. Martin and wife Lynda, of Athens, Tx; four grandchildren, Maegan Martin, Chayce martin, Dewayne Stewart and wife Tammy, Melanie Montgomery and husband Carlos; four great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren; sister-in-law Shirley Bernard; nephews David Bernard and wife Teresa, Daryl Bernard and wife Emily, niece Sheri Stone and husband Tim; numerous great nieces, nephews and cousins.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Earl Barnard, and a great granddaughter, BJ.
