Clyde was born September 9, 1928, to Clyde and Johnnie Ida (Green) Jones in McMinnville, Tennessee. He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Georgine, and by two brothers, Charles Austin jones of McMinnville, James Winston Jones of Murfreesboro, and sister Dorothy Jones Mullican of Maryville, Tennessee.
Clyde was foremost a joyful Christian, who loved to share his faith and the Bible. He led hundreds of people to a new life in Christ and encouraged them to maturity as Christians. Many became workers, teachers, evangelists, and leaders in the Church all over the world. He served as an elder in the Central and the Mayfair congregations of the Church of Christ in Huntsville. He was a founder and leader of the His Way Recovery Center in Huntsville, which has trained more than 1000 men and women to reach sobriety through the power of Jesus Christ.
Clyde graduated from Warren County High School, Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean war. He was stationed at the Pentagon, Pirinclik Air Station in Turkey, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, achieving the rank of Captain. He worked in the space industry for the Martin Company in Huntsville and in Orlando, Florida, and in 1960 became a founding member of NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center, where he served as Chief of the Electrical Control Systems branch. After retiring from NASA, he taught electrical engineering as an instructor at the University of Alabama Huntsville, and founded a scholarship fund which bears his name. He also supported the development of dozens of successful small businesses through his financial support and mentorship.
