BRAUDAWAY CAROLYN ANN BRAUDAWAY (Age 73) Of Springfield, VA passed away peacefully at her home on July 20, 2017 surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Carolyn was born in Huntington, WV on November 10, 1943 to Anthony and Frances Krauch. She attended the University of Virginia where she graduated with a B.S. degree in Nursing.

Following graduation, she entered the Navy Nurse Corp and was stationed at the Oakland Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA where she worked with wounded Vietnam Veterans for two years.

She continued her service in the Army reserves, and received her master's degree in Psychiatric Nursing at Cal State Fresno in 1978, during which she began her teaching career at Modesto Junior College, and then at Duke University.

In 1982, Carolyn married her husband Jessie at Fort Bragg, NC, and shortly thereafter they moved to Seoul, South Korea for three years where she taught Korean nurses how to pass the American nursing board exam.

During this time they traveled throughout Asia together.

Jessie was assigned to the Pentagon in 1985, but before returning to the states they adopted their daughter Jennifer.

They settled in Springfield, VA, and Carolyn resumed her career teaching Psychiatric Nursing at Columbia Union College.

Carolyn would go on to teach at CUC until her retirement, during which she would be honored with the prestigious Zapara Award for excellence in teaching.

In 2003, Carolyn retired as a Colonel in the Army, after 38 years of active and reserve service, and in 2006, she retired after 30 years of teaching.

Her love of travel and dedication to others continued throughout her retirement, working with the Wounded Warrior Project's mentor program, and cruising the world with her husband Jessie.

Carolyn was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend. She was also an accomplished gardener, seamstress, and cook.

She made many close and enduring friendships over the years, and was known for her thoughtful counsel, sense of humor, and compassion for others.

Her strength and courage as a person could be seen in the many ways she lived her life, but was no more evident than in her battle with cancer. She will be incredibly missed.

Carolyn is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Jessie, her daughter Jennifer Braudaway of Baltimore, MD, stepsons Douglas (Wilma) Braudaway of Del Rio, TX and David (Bernadet) Braudaway of Colorado Springs, CO, sister Arlene (Otis) Pool of Great Falls, VA, many nieces and nephews, and her Yorkshire Terrier, Teddy, whom she adored.

A funeral service will be held at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, 6304 Lee Chapel Road, Burke, VA 22015, on Wednesday, July 26 at 4 p.m. (visitation) and 5 p.m. (service).

Reception to follow.

Burial service will take place at a later date, at Arlington National Cemetery.
