Bobby Ray Shepherd, 79, of Rome City died Saturday, July 22, 2017, at 12:40 p.m. in his residence.

He was born June 14, 1938, in Floyd County, Kentucky, to Sam and Laura (Vanderpool) Shepherd.

On December 24, 1959, in Hueysville, Kentucky, he married Erma Lee Prater. She survives in Rome City.

Mr. Shepherd lived in this area for over 45 years, coming from Kentucky.

He worked as a coal miner while living in Kentucky. He later worked at a foundry in Hillsdale, Michigan, and retired from construction work with Skip Altimus.

Bobby loved to hunt, fish, mow the grass, and be outside.

Also surviving are two daughters, Debra (John) Snyder of Rome City and Michelle (Phil) Chaffins of Rome City; two sons, Larry (Alice) Shepherd of LaGrange and Rick (Hollie) Shepherd of Orland; seven grandchildren, Crystal (Darren) Maggard, Amber (Josh) Shotzman, Jessica (Mike) Pridgeon, Shannon (Justin) Brinkman, Brandon Freeland, Brittany Freeland, and Phil Chaffins; eight great-grandchildren, Casey Maggard, Deagan Maggard, Hunter Brinkman, Tanner Brinkman, Mathew Freeland, Ethan Freeland, Elijah Freeland, and Adylynn Hope Chaffins; three sisters, Shelby Jean Sparkman of Kentucky , Pauline (Terry) Fast of Camden, Michigan, and Gail (Bob) Ellis of LaGrange; and four brothers, Sam Shepherd, Jr. of Homer, Michigan, Mitchell (Mary) Shepherd of Kentucky, Jimmy Shepherd of Reading, Michigan, and Gary (Veronica) Shepherd of Stroh.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Clyde Shepherd, High Shepherd, Windall Shepherd, and Charles “Chick” Shepherd.

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 27, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, State Road 9 North, Wolcottville with Pastor Robert Ellis officiating.

Burial will be in Orange Cemetery, Rome City.

Pallbearers will be Larry Shepherd, Rick Shepherd, Phil Chaffins, Darren Maggard, Brandon Freeland, and Phil Chaffins.

Calling is Wednesday, July 26, 2017, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the services on Thursday.

Preferred memorials are to the family for funeral expenses.
