Michael Henry Stroud entered this life on November 15, 1965, the eldest son of Lee and Helen (Sailor) Stroud. He departed from us on July 21 following a lengthy illness surrounded by loving family.

Mike was born on a farm near Trenton Missouri, where he developed a lifetime love of the woods and hunting that he shared first with his dad, Lee, and brother, Jim. In adulthood, Mike shared his love of woods and wildlife with his son, Andrew.

Throughout Mike’s early life he displayed natural talent in basketball, football, baseball, track, archery, and Golden Gloves boxing, for which he won many trophies. In track and field, Mike qualified for state multiple times as a discus thrower and twice placed at state championships. His power and determination earned him the nickname “Bull Moose.” It was his ability to throw strikes, however, that won Mike a scholarship to Missouri Western and a spot on their baseball roster as a starting pitcher.

Beyond Mike’s athletic talent, he excelled in the classroom, first in high school by earning his way into the National Honor Society, and then in college by gaining admittance into the highly competitive Nursing Department. Always a people person, Mike found his calling in the medical field. After graduating with his nursing degree, Mike pursued graduate work and became a Licensed FNP.

Mike provided decades of compassionate health care, first with Med Clinic and then with Northwest Health Services since 2004. He earned the reputation of a doctor who listened intently, diagnosed accurately, treated effectively, and made patients know they mattered, even as his own health failed. A tribute on the Northwest Health web site describes Mike as a caregiver who “walks every patient out” and, no matter how packed his schedule, never turns a patient away. In 2016 he was the recipient of the prestigious Susan Wilson Dedication to Healthcare Award.

Mike was even more dedicated to his family, church, and community. On October 17, 1992, he united in marriage with Kathleen “Kathie” Prawitz. They would have celebrated their 25th Anniversary this fall. Their union blessed them with a son, Andrew, and a daughter, Allison. Mike and Kathie devoted infinite evening and weekend hours to their children’s practices and games, with Mike often serving as their coach. Though too modest to boast of his own achievements, Mike loved sharing stories of Allison’s great hits or shots in softball and basketball, or of Andrew’s crushing tackles on the football field. In church and community Mike served on many committees and manned many volunteer booths, always a “go-to” guy when something needed to be done. He recently became a First Degree Knight of Columbus.

Along the way, Mike developed a passion for distance running that led to many first-place racing medals and several area marathon times fast enough to qualify him for the elite Boston Marathon. A fierce competitor, Mike ran with the same “show-no-pain” mindset that allowed him to keep treating others’ illnesses while suffering through his own chemo treatments.

One of Mike’s greatest sources of pride, however, is that Andrew chose Missouri Western to continue his athletic endeavors as a member of both the football and track teams. Mike was looking forward to MWSU football games this fall where as a volunteer member of the chain crew he could see Andrew in Griffon black and gold.

In the end, when his body could no longer match his will, Mike passed peacefully into his next life, Kathie by his side.

In addition to Kathie, Andrew, and Allison, Mike is survived by his mother, Helen, a sister, Teresa (Mike) Zwick, and one brother, Jim (Tracy). Additional survivors include mother-in-law Sue Prawitz, brothers-in-law Ron Prawitz (Mel), Steve Prawitz (Chris), Tim Prawitz (Jan), sister-in-law Judie Townsend (Kent), and many nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Lee, and his father-in-law, Ron Prawitz, Sr.
