Russell was born July 28, 1942 in Leavenworth, KS to Gustav R. and Addie (Knapp) Schonherr. He had two sisters, Augusta and Lena and a brother Robert. Russell served with the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked as a truck driver and did maintenance on a golf course. Russell moved to Gardner 15 years ago.
