He was born April 19, 1940, in Bowbells, ND, to Kermit and Thelma Corey Smith.
The family moved to Port Orchard, Wash., when Jerry was 10.
He attended high school and met the love of his life, Phyllis Westover, when they were Freshmen in high school.
After marrying, they moved around a few times due to transfers with Safeway Stores.
In 1970, he went to college, and in 1976 graduated from Brigham Young University.
He started his career work in Port Orchard, moved back to Utah, then back to Wash., finding employment in Port Townsend, Wash., with the Jefferson County Planning Dept.
He was a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many positions over the years, including being Bishop of the Port Townsend Ward for 5 years.
He retired in 2003, and in 2005, moved to Pahrump, Nevada. Jerry fought heart problems for several years.
Finally on September 8, Jerry returned to his Father in Heaven. Survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughters: Tamera (Duane) Broderick; Teresa (Steven) Freeland; Kristine (Daris) Richards; fifteen grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services at Haven of Rest Cemetery in Gig Harbor, Wash., Sept 16, at 1:00 pm.
