Eric Coffman
Eric Coffman, 61, of Boise, died Monday, April 14, 2008, at his home. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Cloverdale Funeral Home.
Eric Coffman was born on Dec. 5, 1946 in Tucson, Ariz. He was the second of three children born to Vernon and Mondella Coffman. Eric lived his early years in Ariz. His mother, an accomplished dancer, introduced Eric to dance at an early age. His talent and love for dance quickly expressed itself. By age 10, Eric took ballet class every day, in addition to playing tennis, doing gymnastics and swimming. At age 15 he won a Ford Foundation Scholarship to the San Francisco Ballet and began dancing with that company the following year. Eric later moved to New York City and danced with the Robert Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. From there he crossed the ocean to Denmark and danced with the renowned Royal Danish Ballet, where he broke barriers and tradition as the first foreigner to dance leading roles. He went on to dance in movies, TV shows, night clubs and opera houses in 22 different countries. In 1985 Eric accepted a position as school director for American Festival Ballet (now Ballet Idaho) in Boise. In 1990 he opened Backstage Dance Center in Meridian to share the joy of dance with aspiring dancers and others who appreciate dance.
Eric is survived by his son, Kyle Coffman, and a brother and sister. He will be missed by his students, friends and members of the local dance community.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Cloverdale Funeral Home. Eric's wish was that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a local homeless shelter or a program that aids the homeless. Services are under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home.
