LaVonne A. Stecker, 91, of Kiel, died peacefully on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

LaVonne was born July 16, 1926 in Kiel, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Walter Balz and Gertrude (Hein) Balz. She attended grade school in the one room school house in Rockville where all grades were taught by Donald Drumm. LaVonne attended Kiel High School, graduating with the class of 1944. After graduation, she moved to Milwaukee to work at the Falk Corporation where gears were made for WWII Navy ships. In 1946, she moved to Manitowoc to attend Manitowoc County Normal School, where she earned her two-year teaching certificate. After graduating in 1947, she taught school at the Woodland Park grade school for two years.

On July 16, 1949, LaVonne married Melvin August Stecker at St. Peter’s UCC Church in Kiel, and the couple made their home in Kiel. She was later employed by the Kiel Area School District, working as a teacher’s aide at Zielanis Elementary School for 20 years until her retirement in 1990.
LaVonne was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Kiel. Her life centered around time with family and friends. She was a member of the Kiel VFW Auxiliary and she enjoyed crafts, playing cards, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Dario) Talerico of Kiel, her son, Timothy (Angel) Stecker of Green Bay; three grandchildren, Tony (Jamie) Talerico of Merrill, Jennifer Meiselwitz of Kiel, and Matthew Vollmer of Plover; and three great grandchildren, Azia Zwart of Kiel, and Fletcher and Makayla Talerico of Merrill; two sisters-in-law, Alice Fitch of Phoenix and Janet Stecker of Kiel, and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

LaVonne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Melvin (Meps) Stecker, brother and sister-in-law, James and Violet Balz, four brothers-in-law, Willard Stecker, Elmer (Loraine) Stecker, Earl Stecker, and Clyde Fitch, and grandson, Ryan Zwart.

A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home in Kiel, officiated by Rev. Christopher Ross of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. Interment will be in the Schlewsig Cemetery, Rockville.

Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service at 6:00 p.m.
