Northrop, John S. "Stosh"
John S. "Stosh" Northrop, 85, passed away Thursday July 6, 2017 at Strong Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 5, 1932 in Elmira, NY, the son of the late J. Albert and Clara "Peg" Northrop.
Stosh was a graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School, in Elmira, NY and St. Lawrence University of Canton, NY in 1954 and received his Master Degree Education in 1957.
He was Director of Athletics Physical Education teacher and a coach at Haverling Central School. He coached the Haverling Rams Football team for 12 years and Wrestling team for 26 years. He was inducted into the Elmira Football Hall of Fame in 1989, the Elmira Heights Hall of Fame in 1997 as an outstanding High School Athlete, the Section V Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1998 as a outstanding wrestling coach, the Haverling Rams Sports Wall of Fame in 1999 as an outstanding coach.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1957 as a First Lieutenant in the Military Police Corp.
He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church.
Stosh enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved summers spent at their cottage at Point Peninsula on Lake Ontario at Three Mile Bay, NY., surrounded by his family and friends. He also enjoyed beach combing and golfing while in Myrtle Beach, SC. During the winter months.
Stosh was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years Helen T. Northrop on July 4, 2017, and predeceased by his son John David Northrop.
He is survived by his daughter Diane M. Jordan of Rochester, NY., 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and a brother Arnold (Nancy) Northrop of Carolina Shores, NC.
Stosh's wishes were no calling hours or services. His Burial will be held at Bath National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Memorial donations maybe made in Stosh's name to the Centenary United Methodist Church, 3 West Washington St. Bath, NY 14810.
