Biography written by the Finding the Maryland 400 project ( Used here in hopes of connecting with existing ancestors.

William Chaplin was born in England but became a Maryland farmer and owned a plantation near Balitmore before the Revolutionary War. He enlisted into the Continental Army early in 1776 as a private in Capt. Thomas Ewing's Fourth Company of the Maryland Battalion under the command of Gen. William Smallwood. It is likely that Chaplin marched to New York and fought with this company at the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776; the Battalion fought in a number of battles during his term of enlistment, and he served "in several actions against the King's troops." When the American army was reformed in December of 1776, Chaplin remained in Col. John Hoskins Stone's First Maryland Regiment until March of 1778.

A muster roll of the First Regiment taken in the middle of the war lists Chaplin as being discharged on March 6, 1778 as a deserter, but he did not desert to return to his Baltimore plantation. While stationed in Wilmington, Delaware, He and sixteen of his fellow soldiers ran from the Continental Army to the British headquarters in Philadelphia on March 5. They went before British commander Gen. William Howe and swore an oath of allegiance to Britain, and they requested to be taken back to England. Chaplin arrived at Whitehaven in Cumbria, England in the end of May, 1778, after leaving Philadelphia on March 9. According to Chaplin, 200 other "British and Irish deserters from the Provincial army left Philadelphia in the same fleet, by permission of Gen. Howe," and arrived in England with him. It is likely that he remained there until his death, the date of which is unknown.
