Ellen Smith Lutz, 73, a former Ironton, Ohio, resident, passed away on July 19, 2017, in Naples, Fla., after a long illness.
Emma Ellen Smith was born on Sept. 24, 1943, on White Oak Mountain, Raleigh County, W.Va., a daughter of Earl George Smith and Golda Vest Smith. She married Robert D. “Bob” Lutz on Sept. 3, 1965, in Kentucky.
Ellen was a 1960 graduate of Shady Spring High School in Raleigh County, W. Va., and a graduate of the School of Nursing at Marshall University. She was a registered nurse and worked for several different places including St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., the Lawrence County General Hospital and Southern Ohio Medical Center in Ohio, and the Fresenius Dialysis Center in Ashland, Ky.
Ellen was a self-taught cook whose meals were legendary. She was the center of her family, the matriarch and caregiver. She successfully combined a career and motherhood at a time when that was a new concept. Ellen was a strong woman who was kind but not afraid to tell hard truths if necessary. Her passing is a great loss to family and friends who came to depend on the comfort of her steadfast love and her wise counsel.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by two brothers who died in childhood, Bobby Earl Smith and Billy Lee Smith.
Ellen is survived by her husband, two sons, two daughters, seven grandchildren and a sister.
The Lutz family received friends Monday, July 24, 2017, from 11 a.m. until noon at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 South Seventh Street, Ironton, Ohio. Graveside services were held in Calvary Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Harvey of Sharon Baptist Church officiating.
