Ellen Marie Ruth Hourigan, 74, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully surounded by her family on Friday, July 14, 2017.
She entered this world on May 1, 1943, born to Daniel and Dorothy (Ruth) Sullivan. Ellen was a granddaughter of legendary baseball player George Herman "Babe" Ruth and Juanita Ellias. She spent her early years growing up in Hollis, N.Y. As a teenager she moved to Wallingford, Conn., where she graduated from Lyman Hall High School in 1962. After graduating, she worke as the head cashier and bookkeeper for Barkers Department Store in Wallingford. While working at Barkers, she met her beloved husband, Robert J. Hourigan, whom she married on March 20, 1965. They were happily married and recently they celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. Throughout their marriage they were parishioners of Church of the Resurrection, where Robert continues as an active member of the Men's League. Additionally, Ellen was a loyal member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Order of Elks Lodge 1365 in Wallingford.
Beside her husband, Robert, she is survived by her son, Jay Hourigan, and daughter Robin Hettrick; and her two grandchildren Caitlin Hettrick and Daniel Hettrick, all of Wallingford. She is also survived by a sister, Linda Ruth Tosetti (Andrew), of Durham. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Daniel Sullivan and Richard Pirone.
Ellen was a master knitter, having made many heirloom projects for special occasions. When she wasn't knitting, she could be found supporting her children and grandchildren at heir school, dance, hockey, baseball, or track events. She enjoyed spending time at the casino, where she always seemed to have the best of luck. She will be sorely missed as she always knew what to say or do to help family and friends.
A Mass of Christian burial wil be celebratged on Tuesday, July 18 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection in Wallingford. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery.
