John M. Sims was born in 1845 in Bedford County, Tennessee, to Sarah Jane Tatum, age 20, and James William Sims, age 21.

When John was 18 years old, he enlisted in the Civil War on November 1, 1863, in Ozark, Missouri. He was mustered in on August 3, 1964 in Springfield, Missouri to Regiment 6, Company C, Missouri Militia, which later became Company C, 16th Missouri Cavalry in the Union Army. His military papers stated he was 5 ft. 11 in. tall, had hazel eyes, light complexion, and dark hair.

John M. Sims married Nelly Hollen/Holland in Christian County, Missouri, on August 18, 1864, when he was 19 years old. They had one known son, John Robert Sims, who was born February 2, 1868 in Christian County, Missouri.

John M. Sims died in December 1901 in Christian County, Missouri, when he was 56 years old. J. W. Sims was appointed administrator of his estate. This was probably his father, James William Sims. His estate was probated on 3 Jan 1902 in Christian, Missouri.
