Virginia Rearden Mcginnis, also known as Virginia Agnes Rearden, is dead. According to Traciy Curry-Reyes of the Movies Based on True Stories Archives, Virginia died in prison on June 25, 2011. She was 74 years old. Her crimes inspired the made for tv movies “Death Benefit” and “Justice for Annie.”

Virginia Agnes Rearden’s death went unnoticed by media outlets in 2011, but she made headlines in 1989 when she was arrested for the death of Deana Wild in 1987 (FAG# 21699953)
. Wild had accompanied Virginia and Joe Mcginnis on a trip to a mountainous region in California that overlooks the Pacific Ocean named Big Sur. Deana Wild’s death was reported by the Mcginnises in 1987 as an accidental fall.

The death investigation into Wild’s death was reopened when Deana’s mother, Bobbie Roberts, grew suspicious of the events involving her daughter’s death.

An investigation revealed that Virginia had taken out a life insurance policy on Deana Wild the day before her death.

Injuries to Wild’s hands indicated that someone had stomped on her fingers during her attempt to hold on to the edge of the cliff.

Two years later, Virginia and Joe Mcginnis were arrested for murder and insurance fraud. Joe Mcginnis died before his trial, Virginia’s ex-husband, Richard Dick Coates, committed suicide before he could testify in the trial. Virginia Rearden was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Rearden served time in prison until her death in 2011 according to Dana Simas of the California Department of Corrections. Her body was returned to the state of New York where she is from originally.

The movies “Death Benefit” and “Justice for Annie” originally debuted on television in 1996. They still air on the cable network from time to time.
