The Galveston Daily News, Galveston, Tex. 2-15-1896: Mrs. R. J. Underwood.
Mrs. R. J. Underwood, widow of Ammon Underwood, who died at her residence yesterday at 6:30, was born in Louisiana, February 4, 1820. At the age of 4 years her father, Wm. C. Carson, removed his family as one of Austin's first colony of 300 to Columbia, Brazoria county, Tex., where she resided continuously until 1889, removing at that time to this city.
A lifelong Christian and for more than half a century a zealous member of the Presbyterian church, she was fully prepared for the final summons. She was loved by all who knew her and always obtained a host of friends wherever she might be.
There survive her four children and twelve grandchildren, most of whom were with her in her dying moments.
The remains will be taken to Columbia this morning for interment in the family burying ground.
