His earliest years were spent on the banks of Buck Creek in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The family attended the Buck Creek Baptist Church. In the mid 1920's several of the Parris families of the area made the trek to the western reaches of North Carolina. They settled in Haywood County.
He married Elizabeth Gunter, 16 Oct 1839, Haywood County, North Carolina.
They were listed on the 1840 census of Haywood County both between 20 & 30 years old.
Four children; Matilda, Mary J., Andrew Jefferson, and James M. were born to this couple before his death in 1848.
