J. C. Briggs, pioneer of Sutherland and O'Brien county, suffered a fatal heart attack, at his home here Tuesday night, passing way Wednesday morning at four o'clock at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Johannsen.

Mr. Briggs had spent a pleasant weekend at Brookings, S. Dak with his brother, and had been tired Monday but felt that he would be better after a night's rest. About one o'clock Tuesday morning he became very ill at his apartment downtown but was unable to call anyone. It was not until nine o'clock Tuesday morning when his sister, Mrs. G. W. Waterhouse, went to his home to call that anyone knew of his illness. A doctor was called immediately and he was moved in the ambulance to the home of his daughter, Mrs Johannsen, where he was given the best of care. He had often expressed a wish that he would not have a lingering illness and his passing was as he would have had it.

Mr. Briggs came to Sutherland in 1883 from Wisconsin and ran a meat market in partnership with John Meyers. For years after that he was in the harness business and was re-elected president of the Northwest Iowa Harness Makers for the twenty-third consecutive time last year. He would have been 87 years old next month.

A Fifty Years-a-Mason certificate was awarded to Mr. Briggs last March. Last rites for the deceased will be a Masonic service at the Abiff Lodge hall Friday afternoon at half past three.

Mr. Briggs' daughter, Mrs. O. S Bidwell of Union, Mont, is expected to arrive in Sutherland Friday morning. His son, H. J. Briggs of Long Beach, Calif, will be unable to come.
