April Ann Torres

October 22, 1961 - April 29, 2017

April Ann Torres was born in East Los Angeles and made Long Beach her home since the early 90s. From a very young age, April was a lover of books. Her mom, Jeannie, always noticed her teaching spirit around the house, as she taught her then little brother, Donnie. Her curiosity spilled over into art, starting at the tender age of 2-3 drawing animals and as a teen, she would sit anywhere she found herself and sketch. Her passion grew and led April to graduate, with honors, from the Art Center College of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration. As an artist, she relentlessly pursued mastery, dedicating countless hours to reaching artistic excellence.

April's independent spirit and initiative led her to serve in the Navy for eight years. She spent the most time in Guam, and was also stationed in the Central Valley.

April started her career at Enkeboll Designs where she honed her skills in illustration and later, she joined Disney, for over 18 years. April's dedication to precision and quality earned her a strong reputation as the lead princess artist. Her early teaching inclinations became a cornerstone of her ongoing gifts while at Disney, where she trained colleagues and new artists both in the US and UK. In recent years, April accomplished a lifelong dream when she held art exhibits of her work in the last four years.

Like her father, April enjoyed a spiritual connection to birds who visited our balcony daily. In her last years, April became a foodie and somewhat of a gourmet chef. Those who knew her, enjoyed engaging conversations about art, politics, social justice and equal rights.

April is survived by; her wife, Roxana Bellia; dog, Riley; mother, Jeannie Torres; brother, Donnie Torres; nephew, Henry Torres, and the Ledesma and Torres family and friends, who count themselves amongst surviving loved ones.
