Born in Danville, VA, he was a son of the late Jasper Carl “J.C.” Powell, Sr. and the late Kitty Viola Degarhart Powell. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Sumter and in his later years attended Bethesda Church of God and Pinewood Baptist Church. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves from 1946-1955. He was employed by Williams Furniture/Georgia Pacific from 1944 to 1990 having slightly over 46 years of service. He served in several capacities of management, mostly Payroll/Personnel Management. In 1978-1979, he served as the President of the Sumter Area Personnel Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Annie Stanfield Powell; and siblings, J.C. Powell, Jr., Daniel T. Powell, and Margaret Price.
