Mrs. Anna Jordan was the organist and Mrs. William Engelke, the soloist. Herbert Collier and Frank Moore served as ushers. Mrs. Oscar Adams, Mrs. Roger Youde and Mrs. Les Templer were in charge of the floral tributes.
Bearers were Harold Hakeman, Ed Orthmann, Oscar Adams, Delbert Johannsen, Carl Metz, and Les Templer.
Masonic services were held at the graveside by Abiff Lodge No. 347, AF and AM, Sutherland, Iowa, Jacob Moermond, Worshipful Maser. Committal was at Waterman Cemetery, Sutherland, Iowa.
Paul Blaine Briggs, the son of Charles and Rachel Briggs, was born July 20, 1892 at Sutherland, Iowa. He attended school and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1911. After graduation he was employed by Carl Johannsen for 18 years and then opened the Trading Post Grocery in 1931, selling it in 1950 to Mr. and Mrs. Phil Jordan. For ten years Paul worked for Templer Variety.
He was united in marriage to Eula M. Hendrick on June 1, 1916. They became the parents of three children. They were members of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland.
Paul was past Worshipful Master of Abiff Lodge No. 347 AF and AM, a 65 year member joining in 1913. He was also a member of Victory Chapter, O.E.S. joining in 1915. While he was President of the Sutherland Commercial Club, the free Labor Day celebrations were started. He was also a member of the Senior Citizens.
A lifelong resident of Sutherland, he passed away at his home there on August 3, 1978 at the age of 86. Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant son, Faye Carlton; three brothers; two sisters and his wife Eula in 1973.
Left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Ellis of Lakewood, Calif, and Mrs. Rodney (Pauline) Hakeman of Humboldt; three grandchildren, James and Timothy Ellis and Steven Hakeman; and three great grandchildren, James Jr. and Jeffrey Ellis and Jennifer Hakeman; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Ballard of Lakewood and Mrs. Marjorie Maxwell of Concord, Calif, as well as other relatives and friends.
