John H. Sams

John H. Sams, a longtime Lompoc resident and World War II Navy Veteran tour of duty ended when he passed away Thursday, September 8, 2016 at the age of 91 at the Comprehensive Care Center. John was born November 17, 1924 in El Reno, Oklahoma. After graduating from high school in El Reno, John enlisted in the Navy and attended motor machinist mate school. He was assigned to USS LCI 421 and served in the Atlantic Theater that included service in England and the allied D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. John was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbon, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Area Ribbon with one star. After discharge from the Navy in 1946, he returned to Oklahoma and attended Oklahoma A&M College of Engineering and completed his degree in mechanical engineering. John moved to Ventura, California after college and worked for the Halliburton Company oil field services. While working for Halliburton, he met office secretary and fellow Oklahoman Dora Callis. They married and raised a daughter and son together while John worked as a mechanical engineer for Halliburton and the Navy at Port Hueneme, California. They later settled in Lompoc where he was offered a position with the Western Space and Missile Center as Program Manager on the Minuteman missile program. He also worked with Lockheed and Martin Marietta during the startup of the Space Shuttle program at Vandenberg until it's cancellation after the Challenger disaster.

John was preceded in death by his wife Dora, son John "Steve", and infant son Charles Ray. He is survived by his daughter Susan (Bill) Judy; granddaughters Sara Trejo and Michelle Ferguson; great-grandsons Anthony Trejo, Joseph Trejo, Landon Ferguson and Wyatt Ferguson.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday, September 16th at First Christian Church, 1517 West College Avenue in Lompoc. Arrangements are in the care of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
