Janet Lynn Burgess was born on May 6, 1962 in Sherman, Texas to Lewis Watkins Bates and Evelyn Aleta Thorp Bates. She died July 17, 2017, with family by her side at Texoma Healthcare in Sherman, Texas.

Jan spent most of her life in Leonard. She graduated from Leonard High School in 1980 and the later graduated from East Texas State University in Commerce in 1984. Jan and Bobby Burgess were married in 1985. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Leonard.

She is survived by Bobby Burgess of Leonard and their four sons, Joshua Burgess of Desert, Jeremy Burgess of Bryan, Jonathan Burgess of Bryan, and Jacoby Burgess of Leonard; niece, Jennifer Mendez and husband Jason and their daughter, Jalyn of Wolfe City; sister-in-law, Tammie Bates Summers of Delba; her aunt and uncle, Linda Lee and Jack Bowling of Plano, aunt, Linda Lou Thorp of Celeste along with numerous cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Johnny Bates.

Jan’s greatest achievement and the things she was most proud of was being a mother. She would always let others know that she had “4 boys!” Jan taught Kindergarten in Leonard Schools for several years. She displayed genuine love and care for her students. She was known by her great sense of humor, her infectious laugh and her sweet, gentle, loving temperament. She was Leonard High School’s homecoming queen and was elected as Leonard High School’s “Outstanding Girl” in 1979. In high school, her friends affectionately gave her the nickname “Booty.”

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 1:00PM at the First Baptist Church in Leonard. Officiating the service will be First Baptist Church Pastor Chad Leutwyler and former First Baptist Church Pastor Abe Ogea. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 from 6-8PM at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Leonard, Texas. Pallbearers will be cousins, Jeff Ayers, Roger Thorp, Matthew Wells, Steve Bowling, long-time friend and high school classmate, Ted Williams and long-time friend and college classmate, Reverend Morgan Malone. Burial will follow at Leonard Cemetery, Leonard, Texas.

The family would request that memorials be made to the Huntington's Disease Society of America (hdsa.org) in her honor.
