DU QUOIN - Charles William "Bill" Martin, 80, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, in Richland Care and Rehab in Olney.
Bill worked as a stripping machine operator for Consol 2 Coal Mine for 43 years.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of the UMW of A, Du Quoin VFW, Du Quoin American Legion and Du Quoin Knights of Columbus.
He was born Feb. 19, 1926, in Du Quoin, the son of Charles E. and Teresa (Dirler) Martin.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Jean and Al Mercier of Du Quoin and Nancy Maxfield of Spring Hill, Fla.; five grandchildren, Curt Mercier and wife, Gail, of Hopedale, Cindy Williams and husband, Jeff, of Du Quoin, Charles Mercier and wife, Shayne, of Du Quoin, Chad Todaro and wife, Sue, of Red Bud and Brock Todaro and wife, Michelle, of Humble, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren, Camdon, Charley and Cibyl Mercier of Du Quoin, Caitlyn Williams of Du Quoin, Claire and Cory Mercier of Hopedale, Callie Todaro of Red Bud and Anthony Todaro of Humble.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Florence Ray; and one brother, Bernard Martin.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin, with Monsignor Harry Jerome officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted. Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Masses, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Sacred Heart Cemetery, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
