Rev. Dr. Carlton L. Young

Rev. Dr. Carlton L. Young, at age 92 returned to his heavenly home on April 24, 2015. He died at home, surrounded by his family, who feel his absence deeply.

Rev. Young is survived by his children, Fay Young-Bottaro of Cherry Hill NJ, Donna Young of Los Altos CA, Rocky Young of Suisun CA and three beloved grandchildren, Austin Robledo, Jarid Bottaro, and Tessa Bottaro. He is preceded in death by his wife, Maisy Ardine Young and his daughter Cassandra "Joy" Young.

Carlton Young was born on April 10, 1923 in Askenish, Jamaica West Indies. He and Maisy Ardine Sailman were married in 1952 and moved to the United States in 1959. The Young family lived in several states before settling in Concord, CA in 1977. Rev. Young, an ordained Methodist minister, joined the United Church of Christ later in his career. He obtained a Doctorate in Ministry from Princeton University, Princeton N.J, and became a Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor, and served as the Chief of the Chaplaincy program at the V.A. Hospital in Marinez prior to "retirement" in 1997. Rev. Young was devoted to nurturing the spiritual life of everyone he encountered, and served as counselor and advisor in many jails and addiction and rehabilitation programs over his career. He was particularly devoted to the veterans and families that he served through the V.A. system.

The life and ministry of Rev. Dr. Young will be celebrated during a memorial service at The Patten University Christian Cathedral in Oakland, California on May 30, 2015 beginning at 11 am.

Gifts in his memory may be directed toward Food For the Poor (www.foodforthepoor.org), a charity dedicated to providing food to the needy in the Caribbean, or toward local organizations that serve persons and families struggling with addiction or mental illness.
