LILLIE BREWER, departed this life on February 27, 2007. Visitation will be Saturday March 3, 2007 9:00am to 11:00am. Services starting at 11:00am all at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 3902 Kilkenny, Houston, Texas. Reverend Carlos Washington, Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Interment, Houston Memorial Gardens.

Lillie Catherine Gillespie Brewer was born on October 24,1913 in Freestone County, to the late Peter and Keziah Gillespie.

She accepted Christ at an early age. Lillie attended public school where she played basketball. She often told us she was a superstar.

On March 21, 1931, she was united in Holy Matrimony with the late James A. Brewer. To this union seven children were born.They lived in Freestone County. Later they moved to Mexia, Texas and made this their home, and joined Little Zion Baptist Church. She was a member of Heroine of Jericho Auxiliary.

For many years she was an elevator operator for North America in Waco, Texas. Later she became co-owner and manager of the first Black-owned business in Mexia.

The family moved to Houston, Texas in 1957.

She joined Sunnyside Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. M. Curvey. Later she became a member of Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she attended until her health failed. She managed Foust Washeteria and later work for and retired from Billy and Susie Golston.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father and all of her siblings. Baby Brewer, her beloved husband, James A. Brewer, Sr., her sons, Billy Charles and James A. Brewer, Jr., daughter Anne M. Franklin, son-in-law Elijah Godfrey and daughter-in-law, Iva Marie Brewer.

Lillie leaves behind to cherish her most memorable memories: her daughters, Lillie Levingston (Oliver), Mae Godfrey, Linda Harrison (Doug), special daughter, Carolyn McClelland, Jean Cooper and daughter-in-law, Bobbie Brewer of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Jessie Brewer of Mexia, Texas; grandchildren Jimmy Levingston (Vandetta), Charlotte Marshall, James A. Brewer, Jr., Jacqueline Brewer, Wayne Godfrey (Cheryl), Darvin Godfrey, Sonya McDonald (Neilson), DeShaun Brewer and Hope Dotson, all of Houston, Texas; De Monica Womack (Josh) of Cantonment, Florida, Christopher and Chaddrick Harrison of Seattle, Washington; special grandchildren, Troy Mc Clelland, Antonio and Chamira Cooper of Houston, Texas; fifteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and friends and a very special friend, Joyce Benjamin.
