Robert was born in Amesbury, MA, one of twelve children born to Amos Sargent and Sarah "Sally" Patten. Robert married Tamar (various spellings of her given name exist) Gile in Amesbury MA on Sept. 9, 1811. The couple soon moved to nearby Haverhill, where they remained. Robert was a brick-maker by trade.
