Rhoda Mary Stevens was born to Franklin P. Stevens and Louisa Sanford-Stevens in rural Dodge County, Minnesota. In 1900 she is living with her uncle, Elmer as a border in Wasioja, Dodge County, working as a seamstress.

She married Reuben F. Werthenback on April 8, 1902 in Dodge County, Minnesota. Together they had 3 known children, Dorothy in 1904 and Frederick in 1905 in Dodge County, Minnesota and another daughter who married J. Kause. In 1910 they have moved to Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota.

In 1912 they crossed the border into Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and later lived in Alberta, Canada the remainder of their lives. They had other family members living in Canada also, including Rhoda's brother, William.
