ELKHART, IN — Larry G. Harrell, 78, of Elkhart, passed away Monday July 10, 2017, at his residence.

He was born July 11, 1938, in Wabash County, to Ernest and Edna M. (Urschel) Harrell.

He married Ann E. Pirka Russo in Elkhart, who survives him. Also surviving are a son, Ret. Col. Jeff (Susie) Harrell of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a daughter, Kimberly (John) Dooley of Goshen; a stepson, Tony (Angie) Russo of Elkhart; four grandchildren, Erika Gorsuch, Jessica Dooley, and Dominic and Sam Russo; and three great-grandchildren, Reid, Bauer and Piper Gorsuch.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather William Forrest.

Larry graduated from Elkhart High School in 1956, Worsham College of Mortuary Science and earned his associate’s degree from IUSB.

His career began as a trooper for the Indiana State Police for seven years, a funeral director for Westbrook-Metz Funeral Home for two years, Elkhart Police Department for 23 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant and retiring from the Elkhart County Zoning Department.

He was a life member of the F.O.P No. 52, Loyal Order of Moose No. 599 and a life member of the Elk’s Lodge No. 425. Larry was an avid hunter, woodworker and cook.

Visitation for Larry will be from 1-6 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Humane Society of Elkhart County, the National Autism Association, Portsmouth, RI, or the Fisher House Foundation, Rockville, MD.
