KINSTON | Elsie Dean Kellum Scott was called home to her Heavenly Father on July 3rd, 2017. Born on September 14, 1926, to Benjamin and Annie Kellum of Rocky Mount, N.C. Elsie spent her youth helping to care for her siblings, a skill that served her well throughout her life. After graduating from Contentnea High in 1944 she attended nurses training before meeting Benjamin Ray Scott Sr.; married in 1946, they began their family. She devoted her life to her family and became a role model for many. She showed the same dedication to countless other children as she ran her own in-home daycare for 15 years and was affectionately known as Mama Scott. Her devotion to her family was equal to her dedication to Faith Lutheran Church where she embraced her extended church family. In 2015 at the church's 75th anniversary, she was listed as one of its oldest members. Her strong faith and love of God sustained her throughout her 90+ years. She will always be remembered for her compassion, wisdom, remarkable quick wit and sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sisters, Margaret Thomas and Helen Mindel; brothers, William Kellum, Raymond Kellum, Marshal Kellum, and Roger Kellum; grandson Daniel Scott; and son-in-law, Frank Shapins. She is survived by sisters, Anne Rhue and Nancy Rizzo; her children and spouses, Elsie Raye Scott, Patricia Shapins-Bachman (Jeffrey), Jacquelyn Shore (Edward), Rebecca Richmond (Harvey and his mom Helen Richmond), Ray Scott Jr. (Lynne), Michael Scott (Pamela and her mom Maye Staley), Timothy Scott, and David Scott (Tina); her grandchildren, William Shapins (Tonya), Brian Shapins (Jo), Marc Shapins (Amber), Jennifer Pao (Matt), Jamie Blackwell (Alex), Jeffrey Richmond (Meghan), Ryan Richmond, Brooke Scott Maloizel (Nicholas), Garrett Scott, Matthew Scott, Jessica Heath (Andrew), and Benjamin Scott; seven great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, and cousins who mourn her passing. Special thanks to Pastor Ron Fletcher and her loyal caregivers, Keosha "Kiki," Helen and Polly; Supreme Health Care; and Community Health Care and Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Kinston. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Kinston N.C. with Pastor Ron Fletcher officiating. The family will receive visitors following the service. Howard-Carter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
