Susan Kaye Mathews was born on September 12, 1953 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was married and sealed to Richard Kent Mathews on June 12, 1973 in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. She passed away surrounded by her loved ones on July 12, 2017 in St. George, Utah.

Susan was the eternal optimist who always found the good in everyone she met and every situation she encountered including her battle with cancer. Susan truly was happiest when she was surrounded by those she loved, whether it was riding down her driveway on a wiggle cart with grandkids or sharing a meal with friends and family. She has 20 grandchildren who adore their Nana. We feel privileged to have known her and are inspired by her example of service, kindness, and love of the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Her quilts brought joy to all those who saw them and her ability to create something beautiful was a true talent.

She is survived by her husband Richard Kent Mathews, children Danielle (Randy) Grover, Tracy (Kyle) Jensen, Greg (Janis) Mathews, Kristen (Travis) Mckinnon, Kelsey (Josh) Morgan, Logan Mathews and siblings David Shields, Karen Shields, Brian Shields, Paula Spainhower, Lisa Free. She was preceded in death by her mother and father Dorothy Darlene and Theron W. Shields.

Her youngest son, Logan, is currently serving a mission in Ghana and recently said in a letter, “In the church we don’t say goodbye we say see you later.” So to the wife, mother, Nana, sister, and friend we all love, we’ll see you later.

A memorial of life was held on Saturday Jul 15 2017. Burial was in the Tonaquint Cemetery.
