SUSAN LEYENDECKER BERGER

Susan Berger, 57, of Columbus, passed away January 11, 2015 at Methodist West Hospital in Houston. She was born in Houston on Dec. 2, 1957 to Charles "Nookie" and Virginia "Ginger" (Leehy) Leyendecker. On July 23, 1975, she married the love of her life, Hugh J. Berger and together they had two sons, Jonathan and Justin Berger.

Susan worked at Walmart starting in receiving in August of 1993; working in several departments until she took the door greeter position and everyone loved seeing her there until her illness made her take a leave of absence.

Susan loved reading and read the Chronicle every day, then magazines and books.

She loved her family - family meant everything to her. She was not selfish; she always put everyone before herself. If you needed her, she was there if you needed something; she would find it; she was always Susan on the spot. She was generous of all means; she gave to all sorts of charities like the Relay of Life, St. Jude and Veterans of Foreign Wars and many more.

In the summer, she enjoyed canning pickles. It was a family event and at least 75 quarts or more a year. She liked to drive the golf cart with her grandchildren to see the cattle and teach the kids to drive. She floated the Comal River with her family several times and retired from floating to reading in the camper two years ago. We always had a great time, good memories with good people.
In the winter, Hughie and Susan would make stew that was known for miles around. Susan liked to keep her family close so we ate together at least twice a week especially Sundays.

Susan is survived by her husband, Hugh J. Berger of Columbus; sons Jonathan Berger and wife Dena, and Justin Berger and wife Kim both of Columbus; grandchildren, Rylan, Trevor, and Kellen; sister Lisa Meier and husband Don of Katy; brother, Chuck Leyendecker and wife Ronnie of Dickinson; one godson, Bradley Berger of Columbus; brother-in-law, Kirby Berger and wife Helen of Columbus, sister-in-Law, Barbara Berger of Columbus, and nephews, Tyler, Zak, Landon, Lawson, Christopher, Kirk Berger and wife Michele, Kenny Berger and wife Kelly and Bradley Berger, five great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Virginia Leyendecker, sister Jennifer Leyendecker, father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Mae Belle Berger, sister-in-law, Crystal Leyendecker, and brother-in-law, Brian Berger.

Funeral Services were held on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbus with Pastor Alan Kethan officiating.

Interment followed at Leyendecker Family Cemetery in the Zimmerscheidt Community near Frelsburg.
