Death Claims Kasbeer Man Sunday
John H Childs Stricken Suddenly At His Home Sunday Morning
Native of this County
Excepting Ten Years All of His Life Was Spent in Bureau County
John H Childs, one of Bureau County's well known residents, died suddenly Sunday morning at his home in Kasbeer. Death came about five o'clock Sunday morning and was not preceded by any serious illness. Mr. Childs had not been in robust health for more than a year, but his condition was not regarded as serious and his death came unexpectedly.
In accordance with his custom, Mr. Childs rose early Sunday mornings and was apparently in his usual health. A little before five o'clock he complained of finding it difficult to breath and told his wife that his heart was bothering him. He continued to feel ill and finally lay down on a couch in the living room.
He continued to grow worse and in a short time was having a great deal of trouble in breathing. Mrs. Childs endeavored to assist her husband, but without success, and she became much alarmed by his condition. Dr. O'Malley of Ohio was notified by telephone of Mr. Child's illness and Earl Scholes, living neighbor to the Child's place, was called.
Mr Scholes hurried to the Childs home in response to the message and found Mr. Childs very ill and weak. By that time the doctor arrived, a few minutes after Mr. Scholes, Mr. Childs was unconscious and passed away in a short time.
News of his death came as a great shock to his relatives and friends who, although aware that his health was not of the best, had not supposed that Mr Childs was in a serious condition.
John H Childs was born September 7, 1848, in Dover township, Bureau county, Ill. He was the son of Rudolphus and Nancy Childs and was the third child in a family of eight, three of whom survive him.
Mr. Childs was with General Sherman on the famous "March to the Sea," having enlisted when only a little more than fifteen years old. He returned to Bureau county after he was mustered out of service and was married to Catherine Emily Townsend on December 28, 1870. Three children were born to this union, namely, A. B. Childs, Richmond, Calif; Mrs. Nettie Vickrey, of Dover township, and Ralph A; who died in his third year.
During all of his life, excepting ten years spent in Nebraska, Mr Childs resided in Bureau county. Until a few years ago when he moved to Kasbeer he followed the occupation of farming from early boyhood. He was a man well known and respected in the community in which he resided and leaves many friends to mourn their loss.
Funeral services were held yesterday at 10:30 am from the M E church in Kasbeer, the Rev Lewis having charge of the services. Burial took place in the Limerick cemetery.
