The son of Judge Jefferson G Thurber and Mary Bartlett Gerrish, both natives of New Hampshire.

His education came from the public schools in Monroe, Michigan, where he graduated a Valedictorian of his class in 1870. He then attended the University of Michigan, graduated in 1874 with a degree of B.A.

The following year he entered the law office of Moore and Griffin in Detroit, preparing for general practice and completing his law education in the offices of Griffin and Dickinson.

He became a member of the firm of Griffin, Dickinson, Thurber and Hosmer, which existed unchanged until 1885. Mr. Griffin retired in that year and Mr. Hosmer was on the bench of the Wayne County Circuit Court. From that time until 1806, it was Dickinson, Thurber and Stevenson.

In 1896, Mr. Stevenson retired and the firm then became Dickinson and Thurber. Hon. M. Dickinson being senior member.

On March 4,1892 he took oath of office as private secretary to Grover Cleveland, President of the United States. The efficiency in which he filled his duties was attested by Mr. Cleveland at the conclusion of his term of office.

The last years of his life he was not active with his profession, the law. He was interested in the industrial and commercial world. He was a stock holder of the Ward Lumber Co. and the Detroit, Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor Railway.

He was a member of the American and Detroit Bar Associated, The Country Club, Detroit Club, Detroit Boat Club and Detroit Athletic Club.

In 1880 he married Elizabeth B Croul, daughter of William H Croul, of Detroit. She died about 6 years ago.
He is survived by 5 children: Donald Dickinson, Marion B., Henry T Jr., Elizabeth and Cleveland; 3 sisters and 2 brothers, Mrs. T.E. Wing, Mrs. Mary T Dunlap, Miss Julia Thurber, Jefferson T Thurber of Buhl Stamping Co. and Rev E.G. Thurber, pastor of American Chapel in Paris.
