Leland R. Vander Does, 82, of Layton, Utah, passed away peacefully of natural causes on September 17, 2016 at the Rocky Mountain Care facility. Leland was born August 10, 1934 in Ogden, Utah to Cornelius and Vesta P. Vander Does.
Leland is survived by one brother, Elmer H. Vander Does; and three sons: Ricky Lee (Laurie) Vander Does of Layton, Utah, Jerry R. (Shaunna) Vander Does of Parker, Colorado and Bart Dee (Paulette) Vander Does of Amarillo, Texas. He lived most of his early life in Twin Falls, Idaho and later moved with his family to Layton, Utah.
Leland loved his family very much and provided well for them. He worked for the Safeway grocery chain for 40 years. He was promoted to store manager at age 19; the youngest manager in the entire company. For many years he had the most profitable store in the entire division in the small town of Twin Falls, Idaho. He loved working with people and his kind and generous nature endeared him to his customers. Many traveled miles to shop in Lee's store.
Leland married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Kay Riddle on January 7, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were both 18 and remained married for 54 years until Beverly passed away in 2005. Lee has missed her terribly.
In Leland's spare time he enjoyed road trips with the family. He loved to travel and he loved to drive. He always took excellent care of his vehicles and his boys spent many an hour waxing Dad's car to the mirror shine he loved. Grandpa enjoyed rock hunting and would find unusual rocks and polish them into jewelry which he gifted to family and friends. In later years, he loved to watch the Jazz play basketball and knew every player by name and position. He would take the grandkids in his car to feed the ducks at Layton Park and knew spots where he would find deer and wildlife for the kids to see and enjoy. Lee had a sweet tooth and lived to take his grandkids out for treats and a soda pop. Family was very important to Leland and Beverly, a wonderful trait they passed on to their children and grandchildren.
Friends and family may call at the LDS Evergreen Chapel, 2435 East 1500 North, East Layton from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September, 21, 2016 for the viewing to be held in the Relief Society Room.
