SAN ANGELO Ona Peek Haynie, 85, of San Angelo, passed away Jan. Tuesday, 18, 2011, in a local care center after a short illness. Ona was born on Jan. 6, 1926, to A.L. and Sallie Peek in Concho County and resided there until moving to San Angelo in 1943. Ona began a 40-year long and successful career in telecommunications with the San Angelo Telephone Company in the late 40s and continued her career with GTE. In the midst of that career, she married the love of her life, Robert C. Haynie, in 1960. They resided in San Angelo, Texas, where they owned and operated the Sportsman's Club and the Pitt Stop for many years. Ona was a member of the First United Methodist Church and in retirement she graciously shared her time with friends, family and anyone in need. She volunteered her time in area hospitals and care centers. She supported several military organizations in honor of her husband's military service and in honor of all the men and women who fight for our freedoms. Ona was active in the Concho Valley Pioneers Club, volunteering her time for events at Fort Concho. In addition, in recent years, Ona served as Concho Cadre member attending ribbon cuttings and helping welcome new businesses to San Angelo. A beautiful, vibrant woman in life, Ona was preceded in death by her husband; parents; six brothers, Cecil, Gordon, Carl, Buster, Marvin and Melvin; her sister, Dessie Thomson; a niece, Carlene Lee; and nephew Jimmy Peek. She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Sparks of San Angelo, and Pauline Millican of Robert Lee; a twin brother, Ollie Peek and wife JoAnn of Snyder; nieces and nephews, Kay and Buddy Hunt, Milton and Vonna Peek, Buster and Kay Peek, Judy Pickett, Pat and Lee Forman, Peggy and David Wilson, Jarrel and Linda Millican, Sherry and John Lacy, Steven and Paquita Millican, Tim and Pam Millican, Elaine and Russ Ketner, Suzanne Reed, Tom and Brit Peek; as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews. Family visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, in Johnson's Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Nathaniel Hankins of First United Methodist church officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be her nephews. Special thanks to Hospice of San Angelo and the chaplain, Nancy York, for their care.
