Physician, College President, Medical Professor. Born in New Jersey, he moved to Kentucky in 1788 with his family when he was a child. In 1798, he became a student of Dr. William Goforth and eventually a partner in the doctor's practice in Cincinnati, Ohio. When he was 19, he received a formal medical diploma to practice medicine on his own. He moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to continue his studies. Drake returned to Kentucky in 1807 and opened a medical practice before moving back to Cincinnati to resume his profession. He practiced medicine as a doctor and was a learned and became a distinguished physician. In 1816, he became a medical professor at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, the first medical school west of the Appalacian Mountains. A few years later, he returned to Cincinnati again and helped to establish the Medical College of Ohio. Drake served as president of the institution until 1823 and returned to his position as a professor at Transylvania. In 1827, he opened the Cincinnati Eye Infirmiry and also created a medical program at the Cincinnati College in 1835. He moved to Louisville, Kentucky to accept a position as a professor of medicine at the Louisville College and later became a member of the faculty at the Medical College of Ohio. He was also an able and philosophic writer and an eminent teacher of the Medical art. He authored several books involving diseases, plants, and animals. Drake Hospital in Hartwell, Hamilton County, Ohio is named for him. He died in Cincinnati in 1852 when he was 67 years old. His father, Isaac Drake, was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. His brother, Benjamin Drake, was a prominent lawyer and an author.
