Johnnie Andrew Collins, age 72, passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 12, 2017 at Henderson Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born November 3, 1944 in Flattwoods, TN and grew up in Hohenwald, the son of the late Sidney Loveless and Effie Harder Collins. He graduated from Lewis County High School in 1962. He received an Associates of Arts degree from Freed-Hardeman in 1965 and Bachelor of Arts from Harding University and a Master of Arts from Harding Graduate School of Religion. He later received a Master of Arts in teaching and a Doctorate of Arts in History both from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. He married Mary Lou Orick of Henderson in 1973. They lived in Henderson since 1974. He taught history at Chester County High School for five years and then was supervisor of attendance for the Chester County Scholl system for five years. He began work at Freed–Hardeman University in 1984. He was Professor of History and chairman of the Department of History, Philosophy, and Political Science. He retired in 2011. He was a member of the Henderson Church of Christ and had preached in many congregations throughout Middle and West Tennessee including Holladay Church of Christ, Westport Church of Christ, and Flattwoods Church of Christ. Dr. Collins is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Orick Collins of Henderson; three sons, Mark Collins and wife Alicia of Nashville, Justin Collins and wife Sandra of Franklin and Jared Collins of Henderson; four grandchildren, Anna, Adam, Cameron and Andy Collins; a brother, Branford ‘Rip’ Collins of Hohenwald and a sister, Joyce Lamb of Murfreesboro. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Larry Oldham, John Sweeney and Mark Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Henderson City Cemetery.The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Friday.
