HMC (Ret.) Elton Williams went to be with the Lord on Friday July 7, 2017, at Vidant Duplin Hospital in Kenansville, NC.
He was born April 22, 1934, in Duplin County, NC, and was the son of the late Roy Williams and Josephine Bostic Williams.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Donald Ray Williams.
He enlisted in the US Navy in August, 1951, and served as a hospital corpsman, spending much of his time with the marines, until his retirement in December, 1981. He served in the Korean War, three tours of duty in Vietnam, Ethiopia, and several tours of duty at Camp Lejeune. He served with distinction, and received numerous awards and medals for his bravery and leadership. One of his most proud missions, was serving with the Department of Defense Medical Operations, during the First Lunar Flight of the Apollo 10 astronauts, in 1969.
After retirement from the Navy, he worked with Piedmont Airlines/US Airways, and retired in 1995. He loved to fly, owned several airplanes, and owned Eagles Nest Airport. He was also an avid motorcyclist, and a member of Rolling Thunder, a motorcycle organization known for their charitable work and for bringing awareness of ongoing POW/MIA issues.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ruby Fowler Williams; a stepdaughter Sherry Stallings Ledoux (Frank Bowman) of Greensboro, NC; a stepson Dale Stallings of Jacksonville, NC; a granddaughter Jessica Ledoux of Brooklyn, NY; a grandson Erin Patz of Garland, PA; two brothers, Danny H. Williams (Margaret) of Jacksonville, NC and Douglas Earl Williams (Flora) of Potters Hill, NC; two sisters, Carol Bass of Beulaville, NC and Frances Evelyn Cauley of Kinston, NC; 13 nieces and nephews and 23 great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors.
